“Art”, one of the most awarded and accomplished theatre comedies in the world, is set to be staged at the Macau Cultural Centre in April.

This humorous play by French playwright Yasmina Reza about three friends and a pricey white painting has made people laugh throughout the world, and now it’s Macau’s turn with the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre’s interpretation.
The original play, written by French playwright Yasmina Reza premiered in Paris in 1994, immediately winning the attention of the international theatre circles. So far, it has been translated into 36 languages, now being adapted for the first time to Cantonese.
During its 14 years of continuous staging, it has been the recipient of numerous drama awards, such as those from the Tony and Molière Awards. Reza was also the first non-English speaking playwright to have won a Tony Award for Best Play. A highly significant female director in French contemporary theatre, Yasmina Reza has become one of today’s most important playwrights and novelists not only in France, but internationally, specially for her play “Art”.
The current Cantonese adaptation of “Art” was an instant success in Hong Kong last year. Directed by Weigo Lee and translated by Jin Zhiping, the play stars Chow Chi Fai, Poon Chan Leung and Sun Wai Keung, three renowned male actors from the neighbouring city.
Weigo Lee was awarded the Best Director prize by the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies in 2000, 2002 and 2006 with “Cricket in my Life”, “Spiders in Meditation” and “The Massage King” respectively.
The comedy “Art”, which raises questions about art and friendship, concerns three long-time friends - Serge, Marc, and Yvan. Serge, indulging his penchant for modern art, buys a large, expensive, and completely white paintings. Marc is horrified, and their relationship suffers considerable strain as a result of their differing opinions about what constitutes “art.” Yvan, caught in the middle of the conflict, tries to please and mollify both of them.
