The Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macau SAR Government presents the 23rd Macau International Music Festival (MIMF) from October 9th to November 8th, 2009. Each year the Macau International Music Festival brings internationally renowned artists from all over the world to Macau. Over the course of its decades-long history, it has gradually evolved into the major musical event in the territory.

The MIMF seeks to promote a balanced range of performances in order to reflect the diversity and uniqueness of Macau. It also strives to enrich the cultural life of the region while meeting the expectations and aspirations of the community.
This year’s program embraces opera, symphonic, choral and chamber music, as well as contemporary, folk, pop, fusion and jazz music. Also offered is yet another dynamic encounter between East and West.
Still more international artists travel to the MSAR this year, presenting an MIMF edition rich in diversity. Twenty-one programmes from the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Italy, Czech Republic, Poland, Portugal, the USA, Argentina, Venezuela, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia and Mainland China bathe Macau’s stages in both ancient and experimental sonic colours.
Headlining and opening the programme of the 23rd MIMF is the Macau Orchestra’s The Butterfly Lovers Concert. Renowned pianist Shi Shucheng is soloist in the historical Yellow River Piano Concerto, which he also had a hand in arranging, while the eminent violinist Yu Lina, who debuted the “Butterfly Lovers” Violin Concerto fifty years ago, comes to Macau to perform the popular work, this time under the baton of renowned Chinese conductor Chen Xieyang, former Music Director of the Shanghai Symphony.
This year the Festival also features fusion music. The American group Flexible Music and the Berlin-based contemporary jazz Ensemble “Link Together” will perform on October 20 (Dom Pedro V Theatre, 8pm). With an instrumentation that blurs the line between jazz, rock and classical music, Flexible Music is composed of four of New York’s most active young new music performers on their respective instruments.
