Taipa Rua de Seng Tou Project to Go Ahead

The final blueprint of the US$25 million Taipa Rua de Seng Tou underground carpark and park, which is themed on a natural environment, was released yesterday following amendments done in response to opinions collected.

Acting deputy director of the Land, Public Works and Transport Bureau (DSSOPT), Daniel Low, announced that the optimised plan of the 28,914 square-metre park and 48,700 square-metre two-storey underground carpark was finalised.

The plan will then be sent to the architects for developing delicate designs and the construction contract is expected to put up for public tender in mid 2008, Mr Low added.

The one-month public consultation period between May and June had collected 104 proposals from the public, neighbourhood associations, Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau, Cultural Affairs Bureau, Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau and other DSSOPT departments.

According to suggestions and opinions received, Mr Low said changes had been made on the initial proposal including an increase of the number of trees planted and the number of rotundas to eight, the change from a bicycle track to a running track and creating natural lighting and ventilated windows in the public library.

The park will be enclosed by Rua de Seng Tou, Avenida de Guimaraes, Rua de Coimbra and Avenida de Kwong Tung in Taipa.

In the middle of the park, an artificial lake is located in which fountain displays will be set up during non-swimming seasons; whilst in summer the lake will be open to the public as a swimming pool with basic water facilities.

Two 580 square-metre and 448 square-metre open integrated sports stadium and a basketball court will take up the areas along the two sides of the park.

The 2,200 square-metre public library will be built in the basement with entrances and exits linked to the park and carpark.

The carpark underneath will provide 1,503 and 1,304 parking spaces for cars and motorbikes respectively, of which 16 spaces are for the physically disadvantaged.

Mr Low said the park will be managed by government departments while the carpark will be managed by a private company through public tender.
