The United States beat Cuba by 3-2 here on Saturday at the women’s volleyball Grand Prix Macao leg.
The U.S. team, headed by the Chinese volleyball legend Lang Ping, came across a scary moment in the first set when the Cubans displayed the matching powerful net skills and the even more stable defense to win the set 25-18.
The gritty Americans improved their defense and continuity in the second set to win 25-21.
The following set saw a point-to-point tussle between the two sides as the score had been tied for 13 times prior to the U.S. winning by 25-23.
Cuba dominated the net in the fourth set and bounced back from a 14-19 dismay to grasp the set by 25-22.
Neither of the two sides seemed to give up the victory hope in the final set and the score had been drawn for seven times before the U.S. side clinched the victory 15-13.
Lang Ping eulogized her team’s hard bid for the victory and wished that the young players could learn more experience from the tough game.
“Concentration was the key to today’s win, ” said Lang.
The U.S. side will encounter the Netherlands on the final match Sunday while the Cubans will challenge the host China.
