Comment – This surely was a serious warning, but damage in Macau was fortunately limited to some material damage including the swimming pool roof. As reported on TheMacauDaily there were no serious injuries.

As reported by (CBC) – Typhoon Prapiroon forced tens of thousands of people in southern China from their homes on Thursday as it roared over Guangdong province.

The storm had killed six people in the Philippines before it made landfall in China at 7:20 p.m. local time.

Officials ordered 65,000 people to leave their homes and warned the storm could trigger severe flooding and landslides.

The coastal cities of Yangjiang and Dianbai were already enduring winds of up to 120 km/h and heavy rain.

Prapiroon, which means “god of rain” in Thai, was moving northwest at 14-19 km/h, China’s state meteorological agency said.

The storm brushed by Macau and Hong Kong with heavy winds and rain. In Hong Kong hundreds of airline flights were delayed, cancelled or redirected. An estimated 3,000 passengers were left stranded.

Prapiroon was said to be “as strong if not stronger” than Typhoon Bilis, which hit the region in July and killed at least 600 people and triggered mass flooding and mudslides.

An estimated five million people are believed to have been forced from their homes by Bilis, which caused at least $2 billion US in damage.

Bilis was followed soon after by Typhoon Kaemi, which weakened and was downgraded to a tropical storm as it made landfall.
