Macau April Visitor Arrivals Continues to Grow

Macao visitor arrivals totalled 2,488,697 in April 2008, a year-on-year increase of 11.8%. Visitors from Mainland China (1,482,367) and Southeast Asia (141,655) surged by 29.8% and 47.2% respectively, while those from Hong Kong (620,538) decreased by 18.5%. Same-day visitors accounted for 52.9% of the total arrivals, at 1,317,388.

The majority of the visitors came from Mainland China, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia, which accounted for 59.6%, 24.9% and 5.7% of the total respectively. Among the Mainland visitors, 41.1% (609,221) travelled to Macao under the Individual Visit Scheme.

In the first four months of 2008, visitor arrivals reached 9,995,006, up by 16.3% year-on-year. Visitors from Mainland China (5,868,051) and Southeast Asia rose by 24.4% and 58.4% respectively, but those from Hong Kong decreased by 2.8%. Furthermore, same-day visitors shared 52.7% of the total arrivals, at 5,268,959.

Analyzed by mode of transport, visitor arrivals by sea went up by 7.4% over the first four months of 2007 to 3,136,372. Among them, 2,823,390 arrived at the Outer Harbour (+3.5%), with 57.5% from Hong Kong and 23.8% from Mainland China.

Visitor arrivals by land grew by 20.9% to 6,291,446. Visitors arriving through the Border Gate increased by 14.4% to 5,954,819 and the majority were visitors from Mainland China (79.1%) and Hong Kong (14.5%).

In addition, visitor arrivals by air totalled 567,188, up by 20.6% over the first four months of 2007. Visitors arriving at the Macao International Airport rose by 19.5% to 556,626, with those from Taiwan, China (35.5%), Southeast Asia (29.7%) and Mainland China (21.8%) as the major users.
