Written during 1956 and 1957 by the renowned playwright Lao She, Teahouse is set in Beijing’s Yutai Teahouse, where various characters from society are cleverly depicted. In the chaotic yet inspiring history of China spanning more than a century, embracing the late Qing Dynasty, the Warlord period and the victory in the Sino-Japanese War, a parade of personalities and a rapidly changing society are put under the unforgiving theatrical microscope.

Teahouse – produced by the Beijing People’s Art Theatre and co-directed by drama maestros Zhao Ju Yin and Xia Chun – premiered on 29th March 1958 at the Beijing ShouDu Theatre. Decades later, the drama continues to enthrall, and is one of the few programmes continuously presented by the Beijing People’s Art Theatre. In 1980, Teahouse was the first Chinese drama to be performed overseas. In 1992, on the 40th anniversary of the Beijing People’s Art Theatre, Teahouse racked up its 374th -and last – performance.
In 1999, ‘hot’ director Lin Zhaohua, with a brand new team of actors and actresses, revised the drama, since then Teahouse has performed for over 500 audiences, and has been seen in more than a dozen countries and regions on three continents. It is indeed a classic Chinese drama.
